I live in a small town which is disproportionately popular with tourists. Because of this, people are hoarding property to rent out on Airbnb. I want to buy a house but will never be able to afford it unless the market is flooded with properties.

Again I'm not looking for anything illegal just some propaganda tricks to keep the tourists away for a year or two.

We are talking local level. It's actually possible to get things done, especially if you lay the groundwork and get some help. It doesn't need to be OP getting in the door, just start small and eventually their org can get someone to step up and take a position of power.

It's only smuglord-worthy if we are at the federal level imo

Nah, it is local politics. If there are enough people who agree with OP, then OP can get elected themselves.

I don't get why tanking the local economy is acceptable but organizing collective action to create public housing for the collective good isn't.

I think they said that they specifically don't want to tank the local economy, just the tourism sector.

A large tourism sector can be a detriment to a smaller city or town if the local people don't have enough control or investment in the sector themselves.

It's definitely good to organize, but if they are in the US, building publicly housing (an obvious solution) is illegal, so things aren't straightforward even if you obtain some power.

Look, contacting your federal reps: well, you might as well pray to them for all the good it will do.

Contacting your state and city representatives, however, has gone a lot more successfully for me.
