I'm sure the food is fantastic. Cannot do worse than traditional western food. But should I be an annoying gringo and ask what each individual item are, or should I just shut up, be polite, and take a shot in the dark and tank the hit if I miss?

I'd definitely scope out the menu/do some looking on the internet if possible, but I wouldn't be afraid to ask about something if the line's not long and/or the kitchen doesn't look crazy busy. Or, when you step in the place, don't go to the line, grab a paper menu (if available) and run translation software on it. Noone's gonna be weirded out/frustrated by anyone grabbing/asking for a takeout menu. BTW you should check out the pupusas. Those things rock.
