    The painful truth is that lifelong catholics haven't read much of their history, and many recent converts clearly did. I wouldn't be surprised if this pattern holds to most religions. I'm also curious how others counter this problem.

      although historically the Catholic church basically held the view that as long as the peasants were baptised and went to church once a week they didn't need to know the history so the lifelong catholic is more what they were looking to cultivate
