The term "leftist" is something I learned from the Internet, as neither the history books or the political education books in Vietnam use this term. As a result, I fail to discern Western Leftist from an average liberal, unless they talk like a Marxist-Leninist.
That isn't an incorrect assessment, they are functionally liberals, just with left wing aesthetics. People who might say they care about socialist causes but then explicitly reject every successful socialist state for being "authoritarian." like any good liberal, they think that buzzwords are a substitute for theory.
