Technically being a freemason is grounds for immediate excommunication. In fact it was been banned since the 1720s and as recently as 2018 it was reinforced.

Freemasonry is deist (it's a very liberal enlightenment kind of group) and mostly had rich Protestant members in anglo countries.

I've been listening to the new QAA and it's about Leo Taxil, an atheist Frenchman with a grudge against the church who wrote anticlerical shit post pamphlets in the 19th century until he realized that "repenting" and writing antimason pamphlets instead would be more profitable.

They mentioned that a lot of the things evangelical Christians still think about Satanic masonry are his inventions.

Freemasons aren’t uniquely evil because they’re satanists or a cabal or whatever. They’re mostly boaters local to your community. They’re uniquely evil because it’s a bunch of rich reactionaries who aren’t satisfied with having control, they have to dress up like special boys and do ceremonies before fucking people over. American masons are likely to be uninteresting, but fraternal societies are a good institution to connect with very evil people in other countries to further western agendas, as seen during the Cold War.

Oh I'm aware, basically nobody is evil because they're an evil Satanist. Not even actual satanists, they're just libertarians or whatever.

IIRC Taxil shows up in Umberto Eco's The Prague Cemetery, the (fictional) protagonist of which is a similarly cynical shitposting pamphleteer. Great weird book.
