i dont think it would've been this bad if the USSR still existed, no it wasn't the most progressive with LGBTQ rights but still, the entire Eastern Europe is extremely reactionary on the same. GDR could've been a positive influence.

there have been legitimate improvements in China, Vietnam & Cuba for instance.

True, i think we would have seen more progress on this issue had socialism not fallen in Eastern Europe. For one thing communists would not feel so fragile and threatened by everything Western that they would have this knee-jerk reaction to progressive gender ideas. But seeing as how they have had the experience of losing their socialist societies to the liberal promises of Western propaganda they have become in a way extra suspicious, perhaps even paranoid of any ideas that appear to be in the same vein as those which destroyed socialism. It is undeniable that society has become much more reactionary in Eastern Europe as a result of the counter-revolution's success. Reactionary ideas help the bourgeoisie stay in power after all. Communists should understand this and make an effort to overcome these prejudices instead of taking the tailist route, but that's easy so say when you're an outside observer, harder to do when you're embedded in that society.
