I was only a pipe fitter for a bit over a year but i think it's only a main if it has branches. Only problem I'm having now is deciding what they are called. Could just be a pipeline even if it's not exactly what most think of when they hear that
If you do steam or gas fitting you'll likely be using threaded pipes or flanges with studs. Also usually welders are their own thing subcontracted out in my area

I'm struggling with the desire to be a pipefitter because welding is fun, and the disgust with what it means to build pipeline infrastructure
