Origin is kinda weird in the ways it retcons Char's character a lot so some people don't consider it canon lol. Doan's Island is a nice high budget re-telling of a (notoriously bad) episode from the original series that does a pretty good job of being faithful to the source material while improving everything that matters (storytelling, animation, etc.)
Most of the OYW ova's are pretty good, 08th MS Team and War in the Pocket especially. Stardust Memory isn't though, but it bridges the gap between 0079 and Zeta. Thunderbolt is a neat darker take on Gundam, but also it may or may not be canon? So there's that.
Didn't know that about origins, just seemed like a good story to see. I'm not super.concerned about cannon, I'll decide that on my own. I didn't mind the island episode of the 79 series but that seems neat. Is there a chronology reference? I guess also what would you personally recommend for someone who has seen 79, zeta (loved zeta), zz and chars counterattack? I figured starting from the start with the uc stuff and kinda just going with it, but if you have any other recommendations for where to go next I'm open.
Honestly I'd recommend Doan's Island, 08th MS Team and War in the Pocket first if you're looking at OYW stuff. Just good stand-alone stories that flesh out the Gundam universe. After that I'd just move on ahead to Unicorn and Hathaway, because those directly continue the story after Char's Counterattack. Then after that maybe Thunderbolt and the rest of Tomino's stuff.
Origins is an ok watch but it's kinda superfluous as a prequel (also the Char retcons issue), 0083 is just bad and safe to skip. Thunderbolt is good, but it's also kinda a more modern take on Gundam that I'd suggest you come back to after having seen stuff like Unicorn.
Oh and whatever you do avoid the new Netflix 3d Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance like the plague. It's bad in so many ways I don't have the time to get into now lol.
Cool! I'll check out the one year war stuff, feels like a safe bet for what I'm looking for. I was hoping tommostlt get OVAs and one offs instead of entire other series. I'm a star trek fan and am finding there's too ma u TV serieses
Ooh ok.
