[Victorian premier Jeff] Kennett’s press release promoting the event declared this “important Australian culinary delicacy has tantalised Australians since white settlement” and “the pursuit of the best vanilla slice and the best vanilla slice baker in Australia should be of great national interest”.

Proclaimed as a national icon, the vanilla slice is a familiar sight in Australian bakeries – but where did this pastry come from?

Obligatory mention to the incredible Snot block & roll.

It's a website that reviews and rates mainly Sydney, but includes other Aussie and international bakeries vanilla slices and sausage rolls. Any of the high ratings I have tried have been awesome. Try some and it will change your mind and your life. I didn't even eat them until I stumbled across the site and found a couple of bakeries local to me that had been rated 9s. Mind blown!

Tip: you can use the tags to select ratings, eg

    https://www.mezzacotta.net/blockandroll/tag/slice10/
    https://www.mezzacotta.net/blockandroll/tag/slice9/
    etc, or

    https://www.mezzacotta.net/blockandroll/tag/roll9/
    etc

I looked up this place I went to recently on holiday and their vanilla slice (which they claim is the best in the region) was rated a 9. Thanks for sharing!
