What scares me is the question of how many assholes in that audience are seeing the attention Rittenhouse gets over whatever mass shooter they'd otherwise emulate. Two of my test libertarians in real life wanted to emulate him last year, one wanting to defend small businesses in a town without black people and the other determined to fill his car with guns and drive around cattle towns/interstate highways Antifa was rumoured to take over daring them to carjack him. Any random facebook post could send them into a blood frenzy because they're that terrified of anything outside their door. When a little man became big by holding a gun he couldn't legally possess, it may as well be waving a red flag in front of every family court warrior in the same boat.
I can't believe what I saw there. I expected some level of restraint, like, people are dead and their boy went through something that could have been very traumatic for him. Not to mention in their eyes, BLM and Antifa are marauding through the country, and he was in the middle of it, and he was attacked. You would think they would at least try to be serious about it?
But no, it's straight up, mask off white supremacy fascism. It really makes me believe that they don't even take themselves seriously when they virtue signal about how worried they are about how "violent those leftists are." They know they're full of shit and they just want to murder activists and minorities in the streets.
And that brings me to that point you made about emboldening these vigilante types. You're right it will stir up the people who buy this shit even more and maybe make them less hesitant to use violence. But I also imagine the types who know that this is all an excuse for violence will also see the hero Rittenhouse has become, and, as you say, want or even try to emulate him.

If I was an American leftist I would quietly start stockpiling as much guns and ammo as I could, awaiting the moment where increasing fascist violence will lead to the formation of working class militias.
