@thethirdgracchi is a prophet.

... The best part? She’s an American born Chinese girl from San Francisco who decided to compete for China rather than the US in the Olympics. I’m telling you she’s going to make so many people’s minds explode. Strap in.

“She became the athlete she is because she grew up in the United States, where she had access to premier training grounds and coaching that, as a female, she might not have had in China.

There is no way on god's green earth that women athletes are treated better in the US than in China.

Its funny cus during the summer games you only ever hear about how gymnasts are like "ripped away from their parents at a young age" to be forced into elite training regiments.

They always try and have it both ways.

Bout to say which country had the most recent rape/sexual assault scandal against a young female gymnast that led to her blacklisted by media and her own sport, cuss it sure as shit wasn't China.

Sisko is staying true to the Prime Directive, not to enforce Federation culture, laws or moral standards on other civilizations. So it's a feature of the Federation, not a character flaw. The new Star Treks apparently shit on the whole concept, with Star Fleet captains playing galactic peacekeepers, freeing prisoners convicted in a court of law and whatnot.

the prime directive was literally introduced in a throwaway line in one episode of the original series to handwave why they can't do something and is very dumb

for the record I pretty much only watched DS9 and Voyager but the prime directive was expanded upon in TNG. So one throwaway line turned into an often used plot device. They sometimes break it but at least they feel bad about it, except Janeway, she just did what she felt was needed to get her crew home.

I think for the most part Trek aliens are supposed to be individual parts of the human character, it is not complicated or sophisticated. All the races are stereotypical personality flaws we find in ourselves and the Trek message was always "peaceful coexistence".

By all means in the real world the Federation realy should have zero relations with the Ferengi but in the universe of a TV show I think the excuse is without character flaws they realy couldn't write much of anything of value that wasn't already made in TOS/TNG.

So you have to take some of the DS9 stinkers in order to appreciate the rest of the masterpieces.

By all means in the real world the Federation realy should have zero relations with the Ferengi

Thing is DS9 takes place on a Bajorian base, which while allied with the federation is an independent state and can maintain relations with who they want. Also DS9 is meant to be something of a “free port” where almost anyone not in outright war with the Federation can trade. So even if the Federation has no dealing with the Ferengi, Sisko would still have to tolerate their presence on the station.

Agreed and I'm continuing to watch it at this very moment. I just found it glaring given how overtly the show broadcasts a message of peace, love, and understanding.

“Eileen is incredibly smart and likes to make the skier boys feel dumb,” he said. “She uses bigger words than they do. She talks about things that go beyond skiing and hanging out. She throws chemistry stuff at them.”

No idea why this is in the article but it's so funny. "oh no this smart girl skier makes the boys feel bad about being dumb waaah"

the host nation, which is accused of abusing human rights and engaging in unfair trade policies

"How dare this 'stunning 18-year-old' support a country we've baselessly accused of human rights abuses and unfair trade policies" America said, desperately trying to close a closet door marked "US History" that is overflowing with skeletons.

But Gu took to it all. She focused on winning events and Yan served as her biggest booster, according to Hanley.

“Yan is not going to back down,” he said. “These sports are very expensive. So many of the Americans ask for favours. Yan was willing to pay, which is very rare in the action sports industry. She paid for coaching and travel.”

Meanwhile, in China, Gu will be supported by the government, said a former X Games athlete who asked not to be identified. “The amount of money and the amount of support she gets from China will be so much higher than what she would get in America,” he said.

Tale of the tape right there. :amerikkka: doesn't support athletes the way China does, apparently not even fucking close.

Gu, a US citizen, made her decision with input from her Chinese mother, Yan, an outspoken “Tiger Mum” (...) “All roads to Eileen go through Yan,” said Mike Hanley, head of school at Wy’East Mountain Academy in Oregon, a training facility for Olympic skiers such as Nick Goepper and Alex Beaulieu.

“Yan is very pleasant but one of the most intense human beings I have ever met in my life. She smiles and tells you how great you are. But then you find out, after the fact, what the requests are. She loves her daughter and wants her daughter to get priority.”

A parent who wants their child to get priority? Shocking! Time to bring out the ethnic stereotypes!
