Art is amazing yeah. I briefly tried some of the old wizardry games and was put off pretty hard by how ancient they felt but I dunno much about them to be honest. Wonder if they are any good.
The Japanese home console ports are a lot easier than the PC versions, but still difficult, if you want to give them a try. If you like really ancient dungeon crawlers where grinding is a big then then you might like them.
Kinda random but did you ever play the Capcom developed Dungeons and Dragons beat-em-up arcade games? Those are definitely worth checking out if you're looking for some fairly mindless fantasy fun.
Yes I have, they're fantastic. It's a shame they never got ported over to PC in the beat 'em up collection, but that's where emulation comes in.
Wizardry is a dungeon crawling wrpg by sir-tech, basically you create a DnD like party of fantasy races and classes and go through the dungeon trying to reach the bottom floor and the final boss. It's punishingly difficult and you either have to draw your own maps or download them off the internet. It was huge in Japan and got many spin off titles exclusive to Japanese language only as well as merchandise like a line of tabletop pen and paper games.
Actually it inspired games like Dragon Quest, DQ inspired a lot of Dark Souls, so there's a link there.
Go on internet archive and they have it for nes/famicom as well as dos.
