I was talking with a guy the other night who was telling me America had great public transportation. I asked what he meant and he cited a recent trip he had on Southwest airlines. I told him Southwest is a company, not a public service. He did a quick google and replied back with a Wikipedia screenshot that Southwest is a publicly held company. Then he told me FedEx is public too for the same reason and that it's "federal."

This is the level of discourse around transportation

Ban weed, ban gay marriage, ban interracial marriage, make not being a white man a crime punishable by death, but build TRAIN INFRASTRUCTURE!? Hey, live and let live, will ya!? Sheesh!

These people are completely and utterly absolutely fucking insane and just so goddamned STUPID

It just doesn't make any fucking sense to me. People where I live will literally kill you if you suggest anything but 4 hours of commute. They labor under the delusion that it can be fixed and it's just "commie anteefuh Demokkkrat" mismanagement and bike lanes and real estate developers keeping them from their car based utopia but how is it that there is no one in the conservative world who has a STEM education and has modeled just how deeply fucked cars are as a premise to begin with

I say this all as someone who loves cars, they're just dumb and completely unsustainable in any sense

    Pure ideology :zizek-fuck:

You have to understand the average online commentator / drivers access to the debate is basically solipsistic in nature, only being broken by the enemy of my enemy is my friend. They'll band together against bike lanes, public transport, walkability, anything not-car and it falls apart the minute they get the only-car infrastructure, highways, and they still fucking hate it because there's the other schmucks there impeding me, the main character of the road.

They've been sold the ad fueled dream of moving swiftly, suavely and speedy through a beautiful country lane or a cool trendy city but noticeable, no matter where it's set, it's always devoid of other cars. Fuck me the more modern "we're saving the planet with this 2,5t BEV SUV" ads by car manufacturers include people on bikes and pedestrians but crucially, they do not include any other car, not even by the same brand or any of the sister brands since there's like 5 actual car manufacturers left at this point. Turns out that's basically true literally no where and also you're out of a few thousand dollars now.

Even people who love cars hate driving. Their ideal utopia is a completely empty road except for themselves. One of the standard topics of normal, everyday conversation is to complain about traffic like you'd complain about the weather. All other drivers are seen as reckless lunatics. Only they should be allowed to drive, no one else.

It really is. I love to drive in that one, very specific situation. I get to do it exactly once annually when we go on vacation to the middle of nowhere.

(And I probably never again, now that my car got totalled by a rideshare guy going turbo fast and rear-ending us. Ah well.)

They use their STEM education to help the bourgeoise, which means perpetuating the fucked car premise at all costs.

He has a minor degree in physics. In countries that don’t hand out degrees like food samples (read: not the US), that’s literally worthless. I read that he was approved for a Ph.D.-Programme in Stanford in physics, but that speaks volumes about Stanford’s criteria for admission, less for his qualifications.

Be it liberal or chud they claim to love science of course. STEM degrees or it's a waste etc.

But actual science is discarded. Models that show terrible traffic is inevitable in a car based society are trivial to make. I've literally made them. No matter the sophistication this result holds. Yet this is ignored.

Same with climate science, same with drought modeling, same with... Everything

I know exactly one stem major that isn’t at least a succdem and he’s the bottomfeeder of the institute. The appropriation of science by conservatives always struck me as extremely odd, since they are so underrepresented in the fields they claim to support their ideological stance.

Conservatives are always a bit funny when they're like you gotta get a STEEEEMMM major or you're worthless. Ok dudes why don't you get one then because when I was in school most stems were atleast libs.

Libs might be annoying, but at the very least you can make them agree with observable reality. Chuds somehow manage to be the biggest morons alive, who I genuinely wonder how they put on clothes without choking themselves.

this proves that the concept of nationality as a genetic/innate trait is not a think even conservatives believe in, it's all about the shared memes fortified with "muh basic biology" sauce

I can never get a straight answer for where conservatives would move if their country went socialist. Because that's the plan, right? You only live in places with the exact politics you want. They only respond "it would never happen."

Assuming no other capitalist country went socialist, it's not like they wouldn't be spoiled for choice

They'd bitch and cry about it and some of them would shoot up a free food grocer or something, but most of them wouldn't leave.

Unless we just gave em plane tickets and sent them packing, didn't Cuba just say "fuck on outta here if you don't like it"? Better than them sticking around and continuing to try to do fascism.

Density has to be used more as a scalpel and less as a hammer

What in the ever-loving fuck are you talking about?

Fucking conservatives and their weird-ass views on civil engineering. I had to deal with this shit growing up in Sugar Land. Like, people living there had some kind of visceral hatred for multi-story buildings. They wanted a Mega-Mall, but it had to be one-story. They wanted a big restaurant district, but everything had to be one story. They rejected apartment blocks as a matter of course. Houses could be as tall as you like, but by fucking god if they have more than two floors there will be hell to pay. No commercial mid-rises. Nothing that needs an elevator. Even the damned downtown hotel is short.

Is the entire movement full of acrophobes? We need to shut down the conservative movement until we can figure out what is going on.
