ADHD meds don't make you want to do things you don't want to do.

They enable you to do things you want to do, instead of scrolling social media while listening to two songs at the same time to keep an anxiety attack at bay.

If you’ll permit an extremely personal question: can you elaborate on the effects on your marriage?

I dunno if I am a bad case or how the math works but it was very hard for me to reliably get all the necessary daily tasks done and being able to help my partner not having to stress about it made the biggest difference. Just skipping that stress and those fights kinda snowballed into things just working better if you can picture it. So with the extra time and energy handling other things became an option for me in ways they weren't before

If I wanted ADHD meds to help me focus on my writing (for some bizarre reason for the last decade and a half I've had trouble focusing on tasks I'm trying to focus on), would they work?

If you can start writing, they will help you keep writing.

Be aware, there's some thought patterns that come with stimulants that may be reflected in your writing, overly explaining things, following one branch of thought too far while ignoring others, missing a very obvious vibe, over-confidence, and writing things you'll look back and be like "Oh god how the fuck did I write this".

You'll probably want to go back a week later and cut half of what you wrote, and rewrite the other half, several times.

Ayn Rand is what happens if you take shittons of amphetamine and never question yourself nor let anyone edit your work.

Sartre and Philip K Dick used it more productively.

btw, Adderal is amphetamine, Ritalin is similar.

Write on stimulants, edit on depressants is the way I go. They’re such different headspaces

Edit: But at this point in my life I try to keep the stimulants to my prescribed meds and the depressants to weed

I read a few days ago that an online prescription start up company was created during the beginning of the pandemic and initially dealt with antidepressants.

But they weren’t making enough money. So they just started diagnosing random people with ADHD and prescribed them with adderall and made a shit ton of money lol

I've been taking adderall for a couple years and while it helps me do everything else, even creative things, weirdly I've found it a little harder to do creative writing on it.

This could be conflated with the awful burnout I've had for pretty much the whole time period though. I can do creative writing way better if I walk the ballmer peak while doing it (I.e. maintain a light to moderate buzz)

I find working out more enjoyable and less time consuming because I’m focused on working out so I can gauge when I have enough stamina to resume rather than rest for too long

Other than that, no. Not that I do anything outside of work lol. I took it rather late last night (9pm) and couldn’t sleep. In fact it kicked in like 7 hours later while I was bed and suddenly I was thinking about so many things at once and I think I slept for a grand total of 2 hours.

To me the main effect of meds is clearing up the static in my mind and reducing mental fatigue so I am actually able to focus on something. It might be something sensible or something stupid but at least I'm able to focus.

A friend of mine had issues with hyperfocus when she first started adhd meds. They probably need to lower your prescription.

Before this I was underdosing comparative to my expected workload, it might be unhealthy (insurance always fucks with it) but I just could not keep up with my studies otherwise and it legit caused some major mental shit and I’m so used to it if I go much lower I might not get any stimulation from it :agony-deep:

In college I heard that adderall would help me write my papers really fast when I waited til the last minute, what actually happened is I would spend all night on Wikipedia reading random shit “for research”

There is a perfect dose that will. Good luck finding it. Lucky with some pratice a regular dose will make getting stuff done much easier so that is good enough most days.
