If I had a penny for every slur I've seen since I started playing multiplayer games I'd be able to make a life-size copper and zinc replica of the Sun. If I had a dollar for every slur I've seen in the past two weeks I'd be richer than Bezos.

Honestly fuck gamers. Little weasels make my fucking blood boil.

we lost it when "Gamer" was reduced to shitlords in slur filled shooter lobbies. The real plurality of gamers are middle aged women getting scammed on their phones because they don't know any different, and even if we limit it to regular console and pc gaming those trash shooters are behind the EA FIFA scam game, again mostly people who don't know games should treat players better than that.

Most gamers are social outcasts for a reason. Just remember that most of the people spouting slurs at you will end their own lives in some pathetic manner, it makes me feel better st least

what gets me is honestly not the slurs directed my way (p rare for the most part) but the ones that are just like, casually in use

in the past 24 hours alone i've seen someone drop the n-word, the t-slur (admittedly i am trans but not @ me) and call each other every variety of gay under the sun

it just sucks that it's such an incredibly hostile space for anyone who isn't a white cishet dude, particularly since it's a hobby that's relatively diverse if my knowledge of the demographics is correct

yo fr one of my least favorite things to stumble upon is the ol' "i'm gay/black/trans/whatever but i'm not like those disgusting, subhuman bad ones"

like i get it, it sucks ass to be targeted for who you are. but you'd think having first-hand experience with that would keep people from propagating hate towards other minority groups, or at the very fucking least their own

naw, instead it's casual dehumanization time for everyone (who isn't me!), like it's gonna save them from the fascists they're cuddling up to

time to become the treat defender: it kinda irks me when games get described as a monolith like this. Like, what do Valorant, Monkey Island, MGS, Spore, Chess, and that Half-Earth Socialism one that got posted on here a while back really have in common? The problem isn't games, it's shit games (I'd argue they're also still art, just shit art that reinforces capital. Plenty of that out there).

Just had a better way of putting it pop into my head: imagine someone declaring all film to be bunk because they'd only ever bothered to watch Avengers movies, or all books to be worthless because they'd only read Harry Potter. Make this guy in your head, get mad at him, and Understand

honestly as time has worn on i've grown far less tolerant of certain habits ol' george is known for. i still enjoy the thickly plotted interwoven parts, but gruesome doesn't really do it for me much anymore, unless it's happening to deserving targets (and part of the conceit, more or less, is that it very rarely, if ever, is)

we are 100% on the same page with dune, it was the first full-length novel i ever read and to this day i still recommend it as being hella worthwhile, despite some of the absolutely wack shit in it (poor chani) and herbert's eventual conservative bent

honestly despite how easy it is to do, i'd try hard not to take it to heart. people can get weird about all sorts of bizarre shit, and who knows, maybe they were having a shit day irl and decided to take it out during your discussion (not that that makes it more acceptable, mind)

hell, maybe they were even lying about not having read it as an attempt to sidestep the accusation of being "upset that the thing they like is being critiqued" :shrug-outta-hecks: you never know!

I return to The Cave with a secret truth that the gamer community doesn’t want you to know: games aren’t really that good. Stop playing them so much. Stop defending them. Stop defending people who make them. Games are (mostly) not art; they’re more like drugs. The industry that makes the games sucks, the people who buy the games suck, the people who review the games suck, and even the games kinda suck!

Extremely based anti-gamer message. Fuck video games, they're a waste of your time

frankly not too dissimilar, though to their credit they were at least pushing back on fash talking points rather than regurgitating them

they just had a very "this shit is dumb but you're not allowed to spread fash talking points" attitude - in retrospect, i suppose you could charitably read it as an attempt to win over the "non-political" audience members, but it sat poorly all the same

Gamering is about how you are the specialist boy that deserves all the treats for being good snd winning. Even though most modern games are programed for you to be able to beat them. So it sad.

yeah but a game being designed to be winnable isn't a cause of spirtual harm to the players. Mystery stories are typically designed so the information needed to solve them is presented to the reader and they aren't bad for you

Spending hours a day alone isolated with a dopamine dispenser is more akin to drug use than book reading

Only fighting games. Dota type games are worse than normal.

Sonic fox is one of the top players right now and loved and respected by the community

It’s fucking bonkers to me that y’all are using voice chat in multiplayer games with randoms. Are we in middle school in 2010? I haven’t left lobby voice chat on in a game in like 10 years

as a trans, i actually never do this! i was referring specifically to text.

i only voice chat when playing tabletops and that's with a tightly controlled and carefully selected group of decent people

Can anyone explain to me how video games became what is essentially NASCAR for millennials and zoomers? This extremely Republican-coded hobby?

I know that bigots outnumber decent people, so this is sort of expected for every hobby, but I feel extremely alien from the rest of the gaming community because of my secularism and tolerance for other people. Why did the "GAWD HAETZ FAQZ" crowd pick gaming? Can't they go back to golf or some bougie shit like that?

Or is it not gamers specifically and this is just humanity's d*generate nature at work?

it's weird how much this varies game to game, even though big ones pretty much share an audience. Like, Guild Wars 2 (and presumably other mmos, that's just my point of reference) has its problems for sure, but people on it are about as bad as people IRL, apart from in the matchmade small group competitive multiplayer bit. I think having to do Team Sports in that bizzare way, where you're just with a bunch of random people who you've never seen before & will never see again, is really bad for brains in general. Retvrn to laggy TF2 dedicated servers!

i will say that of all the mmos i've ever played (a lot) FFXIV is probably the best as far as community goes. GW2 is one I don't remember having many community-based issues with, but it's been a handful of years since i've logged in

yeah, heard a lot of good things about FFXIV but... no Charr....... (as well as barely even playing any video games at this point anyways, certainly not got time for another MMO)

but no big cat women...... if they added playable female hrothgar (and didn't do the thing where they minimise the species specific traits on the female model) then it might get me on board

that's fair; in all reality i'm not trying to get more people to give squaresoft enix their money but it does suck
