I’ve been periodically googling for a couple years for any news on this adaptation and there was no update for legit like 2 years. Today they dropped a trailer. Still didn’t see a release date.
I didn’t know that, but it doesn’t surprise me. Lots of Latin American intellectuals and artists were big supporters of the Cuba revolution. I’m hoping this adaptation of this incredible novel does it justice
The same way someone adapted House of Spirits
You cast Jeremy Irons and you slap a moustache on him
Jeremy Irons... Now that's a name I've not heard in a log time... A long time...
This will be a limited series, not a movie so they’ve got more runtime to work with and don’t have to fit it into 2 or 3 hours.
100 Years of Solitude seems too incredible to adapt to the screen, genuinely can’t imagine how a movie or series could capture it. It would be like calling the shadow of an oak an adaptation of the tree. It’s one of my favorite books so I’m a little biased. I’ll probably watch it anyway, but with very low expectations
I found a YouTube link in your post. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Looks pretty, curious who's directing it.
Idk it could be good, it is a tough novel to adapt though.
I’ve been highly anticipating this for a while. Gabo famously never gave anybody movie rights to adapt this book, but his wife and son gave a somewhat convincing explanation of their reasons for granting Netflix the rights.
First, all the big studios who ever tried getting the rights to the book always wanted to make it in English, which was a non-starter for the author. And also, he didn’t think it could possibly be fit into a 2 or 3 hour movie.
Netflix approached the estate after having produced several series (such as Narcos, etc) that show there’s a global audience for long form (series instead of movie), Spanish language storytelling.
Gabo’s son will be involved in the production somehow as a consultant I guess to try to ensure that it lives up to his dad’s masterpiece. I’m cautiously optimistic
It being in Spanish is def a big positive sign that it will be good. I of course read the English translation but even from that it was very clear that it was a Spanish language story, and any spoken adaptation should be in Spanish.
Thinking of reading the English translation of the book. I tried reading the original Spanish but the language level was too difficult :/
