Aw man, I haven't played enough Dwarf Fortress lately to feel comfortable taking it over. Maybe I'll study up and in a few weeks I can take the reins for a bit
Rest in power, moody leatherworker.
I'm too incompetent to pick up the baton but I will follow this thread so as to learn.
This is so different from the way I normally set up my own stuff, that if I were to take over the fort, I'd spend the whole year just tearing shit down and building it my own way lol. Then the next person would undo my changes, then the next person would change those...
Yeah it's hard to build longterm infrastructure in one year, given the priority of getting at least a temporary shelter up. Anything you build initially is gonna struggle to handle heavier traffic unless you repurpose the space somehow.
Yeah no shade of course, I just always put aesthetics over function in my forts
im so bad at that game im more a rimworld player so if you want a hilariously fucked up fortress with some basic management sim competence that would be me
a hilariously fucked up fortress
Is there any other kind?
OH HELL YEAH
I'd like to get in on this at some point soon (maybe this weekend if nobody jumps at the opportunity), but since this appears to be the inaugural thread, I want to make a couple administrative suggestions.
1: We should try to make the saves public, instead of directly transferring them from player to player. This allows spectators to load the save and observe the progress - potentially making note of interesting engravings, character profiles/thoughts and such.
2:
We should try to include a couple screenshots with each update, so people who don't have the game can still kinda see passively watch how things develop.Never mind, I scrolled down.Alright. I downloaded the save and was able to load it in DF. I will start my shift tomorrow after work.
I can't promise anything right away but it is possible I can piggyback some file storage on top of the S3 bucket backing matapacos.dog. What's a couple DF saves on top of 1.9TB of media attachments? I'd just have to figure out a minimal-hassle way to set up file uploads.
The Subterranean Central Planning Committee applauds your service to dwarfkind.
looking forward for a dengist to massively develop these pitiful productive forces.
I have no idea how to play Dwarf Fortress but it looks fun
Don't worry, nobody really knows how to play Dwarf Fortress.
I'm down. However, every fortress I've ever run has quickly died for entirely controllable reasons. Expect fun.
Mine the obsidian pillar to the southeast at elevation 28
sounds like fun
last time i did that...
a demon escaped the obsidian pillar it had been trapped in and rampaged throughout my fort
i got no such notification and i too was certain that i wasn't anywhere deep enough, and then a giant demon sparrow with mandibles instead of a beak systematically vivisected the entire population
angles
if the perfidious angles might emerge we should be extra cautious
Couldn’t it be a forgotten beast too? Or is that just the gem pillars in the cavern
I’ve definitely had something come out of those 3x3 gem formations in the cavern, heads up to the expedition.
I'd be down but I can only imagine my logs will be like
Rith Amostgoden drowned in the caverns. Holy shit.
Catten Avuzîton got mauled by goblins. Holy shit. By the way, uh, Litast Ustuthubbul - a 3yo child - somehow defeated a forgotten beast. Also the entire Silverblade squad died and we don't have enough coffins to bury them yet, so their ghosts have begun to roam the halls...holy shit
Zuntîr Kilrudubbul has crafted a masterwork toy anvil using the bones of the forgotten beast. The Captain of the Guard has decided to display it at the entrance by the guard dogs in the hopes of enticing any would-be thieves to only abscond with the anvil.
We're losing morale due to the ghosts. Also Zutthan Dôbarkib is definitely a vampire.
I watched a "how to play" video like ten years ago once. I challenge you to make a fort I can run and have survive a year.
Actually, making a fool proof self-sustaining fort is not that difficult, to be honest, especially if it only has to survive a year. You can technically just dig in and wall yourself in, set up a few farms (you need surprisingly few crops to feed your dwarves) and breweries, train a few craftdwarves and the only thing that can kill you at that point is a very unlucky special mood (dwarf that is struck with inspiraion to create a legendary artifact, but if they can't get the resources to make it, they might go berserk) that goes into a death spiral (a killed dwarf causes another to have an outburst of anger, killing another, which makes another start brawling etc), but even those can be managed.
And then, you can just automate most tasks so it runs itself indefinitely.

How do we sign up?

Might be issues if people don't stick to the same branch. Right now a lot of people are split between the beta branch and the main branch.

Boatmurdered 2 lmao
Edit: didn't even notice it was mentioned in the body text. This is going to be a trainwreck.
@emizeko@hexbear.net @Leon_Frotsky@hexbear.net @Awoo@hexbear.net hexbear serial dwarf fortress
I've never done this before but I think I might be able to handle it, might need a briefing on how to handle the files correctly though.
Do you have embark information? You seem to be sure there's iron and such, I'd be curious to see what all the prospectors determined is in the area, aquifers and such.
Cool cool. I'm down to go whenever. Put me in whenever makes sense.
Also it looks like we have a lot of potential managers who are worried about their abilities. I'm willing to field questions if anyone has them but maybe we want some sort of organized way to help encourage the less confident future central planners? I dunno what a reasonable way to do that would be.
I'm thinking each year should be a new thread, this way we lowkey spam the feed and attract new players /onlookers instead of posting to a thread which will never return to Hot/New again. When games like this took place on bulletin boards like SA or the DF forums, replies would bump the thread. On here, making a new post is basically the equivalent.
Also it might be good to lay out some additional ground rules, like game version (as Awoo suggested) and mod acceptance/prohibition (thinking of DFHack and Dwarf Therapist in particular and assuming these are off-limits even for QOL features).
Also things like time limits (e.g. one week or your turn is forfeit)
No premature circus, but the temples can have a couple of statues, as a treat. :)
I don't think dfhack/dt is enforceable, but the stakes are also nonexistent and I agree accessibility is nice. When I play normally, I use DH features like seedwatch all the time.
For succession, I think we need to be a little more organized. We at least should keep a roster of players who volunteered for turns, and try to make sure they all get their shot before rotating back to people who have already played. When I post the next thread I'll collect a list of everyone who has confirmed they want to play, as well as those who have expressed interest.
