Disney is going to have to get super realistic in a hurry, given that you can't make fiction without writers or actors.

Their goal is to us "ai" to make fiction movies without writers or actors and if they capture enough markets and crush the unions hard enough it won't matter how badly the movies suck.

They just need an ai to make illumination script movies to generate 1 morbillion dollars.

Can't wait for a series that's a Mickey Mouse impersonator in a suit ad libbing for half an hour

Non-union writers, actors, and crew do exist, but they're not the kinds of people who have ever worked on A-tier, Disney level type productions. They do low budget arthouse and indie stuff.

A lot of these companies could choose to scab pretty easily, but it wouldn't be good productions.

That’s a bandaid solution, at best. The amount of content the industry would need to generate with non-union labor would be so massive that even if you tried, you’d only be able to replace a fraction of the demand, and the impact on quality would do untold amounts of damage to brand perception.

Using scab labor is a potential solution for productions that are already partly-finished (although even that’s questionable) or to fill gaps in a release schedule, but it’s unrealistic as anything but a way to buy time and leverage in the negotiation process (which isn’t nothing).

My favorite thing about the AI hype is that the bazinga brains will tell you one moment that AI will replace humans in making movies or driving cars and then the next moment they’ll say that AI will form the singularity and lead to human extinction. Like, if you think AI is going to make humans entirely obsolete in the very near future, why even bring up the idea that robots will start making Marvel movies? It would be like saying climate change will lead to the apocalypse, and will also make California wine more expensive. One kind of obviates the need to talk about the other.

The offer the actors got was essentially we scan your face and keep your likeness forever but you get a $30 bestbuy gift card.

It is both hilarious and infuriating how chuds think leftism is when people make media that gay acknowledge that gay people exist

Regarding the WGA and SAG strike going on Iger was quoted in the article saying:

"It’s very disturbing to me. We’ve talked about disruptive forces on this business and all the challenges we’re facing, the recovery from COVID which is ongoing, it’s not completely back. This is the worst time in the world to add to that disruption,"

Translation: this is the ABSOLUTE FUCKING BEST TIME TO STRIKE. They might be in a uniquely weak position the likes of which we won't see in a while. Somebody should start putting serious pressure on the other guilds to join in solidarity.

certainly some TV / movies were already in the can and ready for distribution before the strike, so shows and movies have been coming out.... but damn if it doesn't seem like so many streaming services are now riddled with "unscripted" shows (aka reality tv). low key, i think they rebranded that genre from "reality" -> "unscripted" because everybody knows it is mesmerizing garbage and clicks away without engaging. god, that shit sucks. i remember the last writers' strike led to an explosion of reality tv too.

Is there even a market for this shit anymore? I can't imagine HBO boosting their subscription numbers by abandoning the next season of Gambo for some low-rent cooking show.

i don't believe there is a market as much as there are people who just watch whatever the fuck gets their attention. it's my understanding that reality tv is extremely cheap to produce, so it's filler. also, it's not HBO anymore... it's MAX. and Warner Bros. merged with Discovery, so now there are lots of reality shows on what used to be HBO's streamer. my assumption is that "prestige TV" will be like the chocolate chips in the content turds coming at us. people come for the expensive chocolate chips, but eat the cheap turd because they're bored.

people who just watch whatever the fuck gets their attention

Sure. And I'll admit I'm speaking from personal experience, but when I'm flipping through what's on a Streaming platform, I simply won't click on anything that looks unscripted. I assume its going to be boring and cringey so I just don't watch it. I've got a handful of shows I'm excited about. I've got some old anime I'll fall back on if that's not around. But if Netflix or HBO just stops churning out the good slop... Why would I continue to subscribe?

If I'm not currently a subscriber, I certainly have no incentive to buy in now.

You aren't driving demand for your product by pitching "Nailed It!" for $20/mo.

people come for the expensive chocolate chips, but eat the cheap turd because they're bored.

I buy into that. But now we're talking about serving up exclusively turds for... months? Maybe the next year or two?

100% it's a shit plan and any HBO exec worth a fuck knows it's a shit plan. but it is their only move short of admitting writers deserve a better share. so they will pretend it's a completely viable business plan while the strike is on, because admitting reality TV is inferior is to admit their adversary is correct.

            imo, it's all a strategem.

For my money, livestreaming. If you get more people scratching the unscripted itch with streaming to a live chat they'd be less concerned with reality tv and the legacy media will lose evermore prestige

Maybe we should seriously consider Comrade Iger's point
