Adult Swim has greenlit "Lazarus," a new Toonami series from renowned anime director Shinichirō Watanabe, known for his work helming episodes of "Cowboy Bebop," "Samurai Champloo" and "Kids on the Slope."
Produced by anime studio MAPPA, "Lazarus" also recruits the contributions of "John Wick" series director Chad Stahelski, who designed several action sequences for the series, along with the musical talents of saxophonist Kamasi Washington; producer, DJ and musician Floating Points; and producer, DJ and musician Bonobo. The trio will provide a jazz and electronic score for the project.
"Lazarus," which is already in production, takes place in 2052. The series follows a Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist that develops a drug called Hapuna — a cure-all that has the unexpected side-effect of causing death three years later. A special force of agents is assembled to take on the malevolent Skinner.
I hope the show is good but gat damn I have high expectations for the soundtrack.
Kamasi Washington, Floating Points, and Bonobo. why they gotta get my hopes up for this shit
Did you watch Megalo Box? The music and tone of the first season of that got compared to Bebop/Champloo a lot.
I read a little about it and I'm stoked, hope to make time to watch very soon
I need to rewatch Samurai Champloo. I never heard of Kids on the Slope, is it any good?
Yeah, it's not bad. My memory isn't perfect, but it's a period drama TV show with like Japanese appreciation of American '50s Jazz classics being used as like time signifiers/punctuations of their youth. Might have been a love triangle thing? Had a shoujo-y art style and I really like the OP song.
KotS: only saw a few episodes, but seemed really good for 'slice of life' + 'jazz music' anime.
It's the second newly announced show now with a plot based on antivaxx conspiracy theories huh. Disease Outbreak -> Vaccines -> Vaccines bad (Kill you or are used for 1984 purposes)
The other being "Your Forma"
i was gonna say, it's the "mrna vaccines will cause you to violently explode a year after taking it" shit turned into a cyberpunk animation lmao
Even Watanabe's failures are interesting, so looking forward to this.
Shinichiro Watanabe is cool. I really enjoyed Carol and Tuesday. Space Dandy is good too.
I didn't really find the Mermaid Sisters bad but they're do veer a little close to "haha funny queer people" as a joke, it's sorta hard to tell because every except Carole & Tuesday are complete weirdos so they sorta just fit in. Also this scene comes as such a surprise in the show it made me cackle.
