When 80% of every California police department's time is spent perpetually clearing camps so that people from one town can move to another, forever, there will be historic amounts of new funding for cops.
They will light piles of money on fire before they build public housing.
A town I used to live in in the Bay Area, Millbrae, filed a suit against the state because they felt the tiny program Project Homekey, meant to convert disused hotels into transitional housing, violated Article 34 of the California State Constitution, which bans public money being spent on housing.
Article 34 of the California State Constitution
Article 34 was added to the California Constitution in 1950 on the heels of the passage of the federal Housing Act of 1949. The Housing Act of 1949 banned explicit racial segregation in public housing, which left cities scrambling to find alternative ways to separate communities of color from white neighborhoods.
kkkalifornia at it's finest
The town I mentioned earlier, Millbrae, just had a recall election that removed their first ever black city councillor and the first ever councillor from "the wrong side of the tracks" because they supported the conversions of the hotel to transitional housing.
we need a :california-cool: emote
Former director of the CIA used to get take out at my location all the time!
thought about it every time i saw him! but unfortunately that would've done very little to curb anything.
I mean, I'm paraphrasing for the giggles, but "commiefornia", "commieland" are two of the many that get thrown around where I live
oh yeah.. "commiefornia" and "liberalfornia" were pretty common where i came from
I don't have a cliche reply appropriate for this America is an evil place.
Bell Riots, Irish Unification. It's the year where decades happen.
After seeing his picture in the history books he must be glad they call it the Bell Riots, because it'll at least delay the Department of Temporal Investigations breathing down his neck.
DoTI: "So you just casually went into the past and incited one of the greatest and most important riots of century"
Sisko: "Yes, exactly like it was in the book"
DoTI: "Well, ok, you're free, don't mess with time anymore" mutters: For fucks sake we would be fucked if still let bourgeoisie write our history
Given that people depend on what meager public services that funding barely goes to, this is collective punishment for refusing to take part in cruelty
California got away with having this like "progressive" or whatever reputation for a long ass time, I think mostly because the way most of us non-Californians experience California is mediated by media images of Hollywood, it's excesses and self-promotion.
15 years ago, these sort of "rubes" who bought this image would ask people like me why I don't move there, where it would be more accommodating (in their mind) of my values (I am against liquidating poor people and also want to protect environmental resources). I grew up in a culturally mediated area with a national reputation management strategy, so I knew California was different than it's reputation.
anyway, I gotta say, there are way less rubes these days when it comes to California, and not because everybody suddenly became great critical thinkers and historians, either lol.
What a vile state which i guess there are a lot of over at
California has a uniquely dark history. Definitely read Palo Alto: The History of California Capitalism and the World by Malcolm Harris
Interesting, ill take a look at it. Ive been kind of wondering why that state is im such a way that it is currently.
time's running out to make sure the bell riots happen in 2024 and newsom's a star trek fan, mfer!
Sweetie, it's simple, we need to round up all the homeless and make them compete in the hunger games or running man for my amusement. Last one left standing gets an apartment
I got 1000 homeless people in one room! They are gonna inject progressively larger doses of fentanyl until only one is left, and they win $10,000!
if only. he'd be president tomorrow if he announced death camps for the homeless
Jee, I wonder what conditions will be if funding is removed. Certainly won't create even more opportunities for people to be out on their ass.
He was on the news in his little worker shirt with the sleeves rolled up hauling away a homeless person's belongings. Then they do a nice little interview where he wildly waves his arms around feigning exapseration at why more people aren't rolling up their sleeves to help him fix this unsightly problem. And then he pulls the ol' "Joe Biden angry man yelling" out of nowhere saying he will simply not fund any city who doesn't want to go along with his plan to eradicate the homeless by destroying what little they have and shuffling them around to other states.
