I'm hiking for some astrophotography shots
Yes I'm bringing a light and a backup light
No, I'm not completely insane
Night hiking is fun and wonderful on well maintained trails if you have food, water, light and warmth.
Ask me about the time I fucked myself by not having those things.
Oh yeah been there before, the last time I was unprepared though it was also the dead of winter with over a foot of snow on the ground.
Got my car stuck and had to hike down the snow covered road from the trail head until I had cell service. Took a out 2 hours.
It was sketchy AF but also fun AF
I once botched an alpine start by getting my buddy's truck stuck in the snow, took two hours to dig it out and once we were on our way, the sun was rising.
I did not climb the south sister that day.
I like going in my local forest at nights, especially during winters because this way there is no one around to give me another dose of social anxiety, except maybe a stray elk.
I went to one of my favorite trails
Super remote and usually quite empty. I normally only see one to two other people on the trail per year.
I learned today that wolves had come back to the area after not being there for decades. That was the wrong kind of excitement for the evening.
Usually when I leave that early (4am) for a hike it takes days of prep to be able to get up early enough.
The 4pm depart time though can be a bit fucky for time depending on the trail I head to. I didn't set foot on the trail until about 7:30 and didn't get home until about 3am.
I got home at 3 basically because I learned on the trail that wolves had moved back into the area for the first time in decades. So my hike wasn't as long or stress free as I would have liked.
Good news is I got out only emotionally shaken not physically gnawed on.
