hi! welcome to the mega. i'll kick us off
i've been a fan since i was a literal child, lol... i would watch the episodes airing on teenick (which became the incredibly self-serious The-N) and i was just enamored with the world: i loved the scenery, the characters, the stories, the cheesiness, the drama, everything. it was a perfect show. i would watch it and then self-insert as Spencer from South of Nowhere before going to bed. ok that's embarrassing but i'm leaving it in
i guess i drifted away from the show when i wanted to be edgy as a teen but nostalgia and this deep familiarity drew me back and i fell in love with the world again. it doesn't have to be dark and angry, it can address serious themes with a sense of hope and levity because it's not real life, it's Degrassi. it's a security blanket and honestly i couldn't ask for a better one.
by the way, i recently introduced the show to someone Very Important to me and it went incredibly well. my heart fluttered for like 5 minutes after we had the "i really liked it" discussion lol
anyway. i'd really like to hear everyone's experiences with the show. this is intended to be a free-for-all so just post whatever comments you want that don't really warrant their own thread. ok bye
I did it. Finished Degrassi, just watching this tv special "summer girls" then onto next class.
The clare, alli, connor crew did a good job holding the spirit of Degrassi. Though without them on screen, my eyes glossed over and it felt like a different show. I now have an updated top couple list and favorite graduations ranking:

2006 class. When "your ex lover is dead" plays and the episode ends on freeze frame of eveyone throwing their caps? Perfect.

2007 class. "Unwritten" is an ok song(fatigue from hearing it non stop as a kid) but the chorus wailing to JTs oldest friends turning his tassle with tears and a smile? Genius

2014 class. They did a good wrap up to the series. I don't get how Becky was there though since Luke seemed older than her and his class didn't "graduate". Unless I missed it.

2011 class. I like when Sav took another look at the school and "Yeah yeah yeah" played as he drove off. Good song.
Overall, I'm a next generation purist but don't feel compelled to stop at season 9 anymore.

I'm on season 14 and I don't know how I got here. Season 13 must have been nothing for it to pass by so quick. Alli has been "going to MIT next year" for 2 years now.

At least Connor is more developed too. That's a big win to me.
Degrassi needs to figure out their predator teachers issue. It shouldn't happen this frequently.
Claire
Maybe I'm not pro choice. Specifically when the person is under 18 and still in high school. I get why Claire wants to keep it but being tied fo Drew for the rest of your life is not something to aspire to. Especially when Columbia is on the line. I also think Eli and Claire are soul mates but degrassi writers don't believe in that for some reason (emma/sean)
yeah i have no fucking clue why the writers never let any of the good couples stay together and just be happy. they can experience hardships without falling apart and destroying something everyone loves
Season 12 Eli if so hot. Hope he can recover from this Cam stuff.
We're getting many more episodes per season but it feels like time is slowing down and nothings really moving forward, just circling.
yeah this is the part where time dilates and everything takes forever to be resolved. the whiplash is real afterwards though

Why is season 10 50 episodes???
They're trying to make KC the new Sean and I'm not buying it. KC screams suburban theater kid. Sean seeped bad boy.
Drew is a mixed bag for me. I mostly love how he treats Adam but everything else he does is so bad.
Eli was much cooler to me when I was younger, now he's kinda corny haha. Like super edgy for nothing. I like edgy, but it's gotta be self aware edgy. We get it, your past is tormenting. Stop self sabotaging because of it.
Also a minor gripe but that football team is so puny. How do they win haha they all have zero muscles.
Safe to say, I'm locked in enough to keep watching.

I'm actually mad at Dave. He both lost Ali her winnings and broke up with her too? Cop son behavior.
I don't like Katie but god Marisol, what a terrible thing to do and for drew???? And drew jesus christ stop being terrible.
Claire and fitz are cute. Shame about their parents. Maybe I don't hate step sibling pairings. 🤢
Jenna should have signed away custody to KC and let him figure it out. Though I do think it's unfair she didn't tell him before it was too late, you can't force someone to be a father especially someone like KC. That's always a back out situation, not tough it out.
The Connor plot was weird. I think stealing underwear is just hormonal teenager behavior and not aspic teenager behavior.

Sav and a teacher would be bad if Sav didn't look 4 years older than her. But still gross and hope she doesn't make a habit of locking eyes with the seniors.

On season 4 of my rewatch and I'll say we got to the first Degrassi flaw and that's the handling of Rick. He only got bullied AFTER he did his mess with Teri, which I'd argue makes the bullying justified. I liked how Degrassi showed what life he could have had espeically when he made friends, but it also showed Rick still had some underlying issue that Emma and Toby clocked.
yeah Rick was genuinely dangerous to be around from the jump. he was controlling and quick to anger, was everyone supposed to just tolerate it? he should have bailed and never returned the second things got as bad as they did
Onto season 10. This is mostly new, besides a few epsidoes like "my body is a cage". Wasn't Sav in Peter's graduating class? Some of these grads don't look right
yeah sav is like a year below all of them even though it doesn't really look like it or make any sense
Survived season 7. Now onto 8. This is about where I fall off and just start over again.
ride it all the way to the end. the unbearable parts have some of the funniest storylines tbh

Emma is a criminal, it's a shame I chose her personality to latch onto growing up. At least she owns up to her mistakes but the mistakes she make are so grand.
Degrassi realizes to introduce kids to scary topics, you have to not patronize to them. Dont hold back your punches, make some personable kids and put them through it.
i love Emma, i'm so sorry... she is a huge fuckup and i love her as a character
that's one of the things i like most about the show btw. it's cheesy and silly, sometimes it's an after-school special but it never assumes that kids are dumb or ignorant
Her character is perfect, they never present her as objectively correct and she tends to correct herself when presented with new information. A true Marxist. She just goes from 0 to 100 ver very fast.
