What sold me on this anime was how the White Savior gets told to shut the fuck up and die because she's not actually helpful. She's not the one risking her life and doesn't get to feel guilty. The guilt is reserved for the colonized. Colonizers only pretend to care, then go back to colonizing.

She really begins questioning her role in the empire and it shows why reform and entryism don't work. It was so cathartic though to hear what every person affected by colonization wants to say and have heard.

I also liked how it didn't try to shoehorn Japan in as the colony. It's a recurring trope in a lot of anime to have Japan be oppressed, completely ignoring Japan's role in destroying its neighbors (I'm looking at you, Attack on Titan). Germany hasn't been great at reconciling with the Holocaust. But Japan somehow manages to be worse, where schools don't teach about Japanese war crimes or deny them entirely.

Lol idk if Japan is worse, but there is certainly a lot of anime where the MC is sad because their family member or someone went off to the war and there's a big ol gap screaming for a goose.

honk WHAT WAS JAPAN'S ROLE IN THE WAR?

      big-honk WHO WERE THEY FIGHTING?
