    I'm not sure how similar it is, but the Spanish "re"conquest of Iberia had a similar weak historical claim across 800 years, and involved ethnically cleansing muslims (and jews), and for some reason the Spanish are remembered as the good guys. Maybe I'm talking out my ass so please correct me if needed
