Tbf they probably could've hacked them into something usable but by that time they would've been invaded by a coalition of the US and Russia. America wanted all nukes under control of their puppet regime in Russia.
Well is there a difference between asking for a nuke straight up and asking for a no fly zone over Ukraine where US planes would shoot down Russian ones? Not really. Because if a NFZ was established and Russia flew into it or vice versa as soon as the aircraft engage that's supposed to be immediate war posturing and a reason for nuclear war. Which is of course why the NFZ was never granted (a fucking INSANE ask btw in the middle of a war with a nuclear power). But that was basically Ukraine asking the US "hey, can you make the planes stop and if they try to stop you stopping then, you know, nuke them? But just a little! A baby nuke!"
I don't think anything other nukes will make Ukraine "win". I can also bet that Ukraine has asked for nukes Atleast once.
They've literally asked for nukes right before SMO
And for preemtive nuclear strikes on Russia, even before the SMO.
Ukraine once had nukes and gave them away in a bid to ease tension with their neighbors and the west
There were Soviet nukes placed in Ukraine with a preplanned trajectory to hit the west and needed authorization from the CPSU in Moscow to be fired.
Ukraine never had nukes. They didn't have the ability to maintain and control the arsenal that was placed there.
