God so much of it was dogshit. The fashions were all awful - and that's even comparing them to like 90s fashions. Music was terrible, too. Max Martin was everywhere, and I fucking hate his songwriting, and even in the spaces where he wasn't you had, what, the garbage pop punk everywhere? It was also when studios really got a handle on how to commodify rap music into pop songs and there was just garbage R&B everywhere.
Movies and TV shows had some bright spots - A lot of Adult Swim content still holds up, and I remember the Judd Apatow deluge pretty fondly though I'd be hesitant to revisit it now. And Shaun of the Dead, ofc.
Nu-metal was better than the buttrock like Creed. Wasn't great, though - Slipknot and Disturbed were okay. But its oversaturation did lead to the rise of metalcore, which is good, though at this point we're getting back into subculture stuff so I dunno if that's really under the umbrella of the discussion we're having.
