I’m trying to find an old creepypasta that was instructions on how to do this ritual. Bonus points if there’s evidence that that sort of environment can cause mild visual hallucinations, even in a clinical setting, which I seem to also remember is the case.

Is that the one where you call the shadowman into your home around 2:22 am or something? It sounds vaguely familiar. I remember your house must have a wooden door and you need to hold onto the candle at all times. If it goes out, you have to keep yourself in a salt circle until dawn.

Found the one I misremembered, the Midnight Game.

The reason it came to mind is because I remember people discussing it in forums, because they mentioned that when their focus is on the candle flame, they see shapes/hallucinations in their periphery, which they cannot follow because shifting focus risks a) taking focus off the candle and b) doesn't give the eyes enough time to adjust to catch what they saw.

I think this is rooted in the brain genuinely hallucinating shit. A similar one you can do is stare at your reflection in a mirror in similarly dim lighting

Yeah for sure, I was just recounting that stuff for OP in case it's similar to what they were hunting down. I'm not game to try inducing hallucinations in spooky conditions cos I'm a scaredy cat 🙀
