When I first used gay dating apps I was confused by all the talk of "NSA safe fun". I thought gays were really into the Snowden revelations or something.

it was a pretty sad day when I found out you can't use grindr without a real phone with GPS turned on. My usual emulator doesn't cut it. I don't even mind sharing my location really, but I don't have a normal smartphone

Yup. Which I approve for everyone's safety. I dont want homophobes to have easy access to listing all profiles around the world for homophobic harassment.

"vendor lock in and lack of privacy are good because it gives ppl a (false) sense of security" is quite a take.

homophobes have smartphones. its just linux/privacy nerds/luddites that don't. The gain of homophobes not being able to use emulators is smaller than the privacy/safety lost by genuine users not being able to conceal their location from said homophobes (who are able to use the platform regardless, though in a slightly more fettered way).

Even with a genuine account that I had for years, i can't do shit unless I get an approved android phone so they can spy on me, but anyone with a regular smartphone can log in and look at all the local profiles and get a pretty damn good idea of their exact location with a small amount of trianglulation
