He's hit or miss with characters. Plenty of emotion in Interstellar, for instance. In other movies they're very much just there because the concept and plot requires them, though.
Interstellar was weird. I rewatched it recently, and it struck me just how every male character embodied the patriarchical ability to just not listen to anyone else and do whatever they wanted. Like, you're all on a team, but also everyone is just unable to accept information from other people.
What pissed me off the most about interstellar is how they literally just took the ending of 2001 and copy pasted it in. It was one big MEMBA WATCHING AN ACTUAL COMPETENT DIRECTOR? haha!
Felt like a fuck you, id have rather they did something orginal but of course hollywood everything needs to be a fucking rehash zzz
