Richard Oakes, born on this day in 1942, was a Mohawk indigenous activist and leader within the Red Power movement, playing a prominent role in the 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island from 1969 - 1971.

Oakes promoted Native American studies in university curricula and is credited for helping to change U.S. federal government "Termination" policies (policies regarding assimilation of indigenous people into the culture of the colonizer) of Native American peoples and culture.

In 1969, Oakes led a 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island with LaNada Means, approximately 50 California State University students, and 37 others. On January 5th, 1970, Oakes' 12-year-old daughter, Yvonne, fell to her death from concrete steps. After her funeral, Oakes left the island.

In 1972, Oakes was shot and killed in Sonoma, California, by Michael Morgan, a YMCA camp manager. Allegedly, Oakes violently confronted Morgan, and Morgan responded by drawing a handgun and fatally shooting Oakes.

Oakes was unarmed when he was shot. Morgan claimed he acted in self-defense, and was acquitted on charges of voluntary manslaughter.

      Yeah, i saw those and they're reasonably well done, but it's not my look at all. The Kusanagi outfits I've found are the horny manga ones and I much prefer the more grounded tactical 1995 look. Like i'd legit go in to battle butt ass naked if someone did Mokoto's barbie-doll anatomy full replacement cyberbody. And i can see they were trying to do something like her flak vest, some of her civvie clothes. But it just doesn't land. I keep coming back to the contradiction between one of the game's mottos, "style versus substance", and my subjective experience. If your style has no substence, if it isn't arising organically from who you are, what you know, what you do, then you are trying to be cool. And if you're trying to be cool then you are, by definition, a poser.

      This game is fascinating, utterly fascinating, because it fails to be what it claims so hard. It calls itself Cyberpunk. It claims the title, it claims authenticity, throws it's knife in to the dance floor linoleum and dare's anyone to pick it up. It cannot reject any challenger. And it fails! At every turn! And the people who crow about it, who hold it up as the best of the best, are exactly the kind of square, conformist dorks the punks at least pretended to despise. It's just an astonishing work of accidental art, the ultimate expression of banal corporate memphis that can't even manage to masquerade as punk. And, to attain even hire plateaus of irony, punk had a large elemnt of corporate marketing influence! I cannot look away!
