“Bringing back the Roman tradition of making sculptures of your wife,” Zuckerberg announced to his 14.5 million followers.

The sculpture is by Daniel Arsham, a New York-based sculptor who makes everything from giant Pokemon cards to NFTs of Porsches. His work has been featured at some of the most acclaimed museums and galleries in the world. (Last month, he was also accused of violating federal law for firing an employee who supported a workers union, according to a complaint filed with the National Labor Relations Board. But that’s another story.)

Off-topic but I’m rewatching HBO’s Rome with my partner right now. One thing that strikes me about it is that they did not glorify this society whatsoever. They show even the most sympathetic characters to be totally habituated to slavery, rape, domestic abuse and a brutal caste system while still framing these acts as unambiguously evil. It would have been easy to have an audience insert who is the one moral person in an immoral time, like Vikings did with the English monk, but they took the tougher and more honest route.

Lucius Vorenus was a hero... of Roman ideals, which were fucked up from the start.
