    The "ham" suffix means farm or homestead. The Sandring part is a corruption of Sant Dersingham, with Dersing having been someone's name. So the place was literally called "the sandy part of dersing's farm" a thousand years ago and it got mangled with time.

      Interesting how that's similar both Dravidian and Vietnamese(?) naming suffixes (Nagapattinam, Vietnam, etc)
