yeah but the white house basically told them they don't have to block it right away and they wouldn't gaf or do anything. (though obviously complying immediately would help its chances of being saved later, so why the hell they wouldn't they?)

we generally don’t describe people following murder law as "enforcing a self-ban on killing people."

if murder law was enacted without any enforcement or penalty then that descriptor wouldn't be too far off

      No, read the press release.

      https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2025/01/17/statement-by-white-house-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-regarding-tiktok/

The press release says follow the law, and TikTok is following the law by shutting down.

where does it say follow the law?

Given the sheer fact of timing, this Administration recognizes that actions to implement the law simply must fall to the next Administration, which takes office on Monday.

        also this

        https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/show/biden-white-house-says-enforcement-of-tiktok-ban-will-fall-to-trump-2

        So this is entirely symbolic?

Exactly. It is symbolic. It has no effect.

edit: tiktok's already in the process of restoring service despite the law technically being in place lol
