While she was receiving welfare, she took out a student loan to go to school. During her schooling, the Ontario gov't made it illegal to receive both welfare and a student loan at the same time. She was unaware this happened.

The gov't demanded she pay $13,000 and and deducted it from her monthly cheques, leaving her with $18/month. Then she was placed under house arrest and had her welfare benefits suspended. She also lost her drug benefits and could no longer afford her medication.

Then she took her own life, 8 months pregnant.

I never heard of this story before but holy fuck does this make me mad. Literally treating someone like a violent criminal because they were poor and wanted to lift themselves out of poverty.
