it is, but i've known plenty of smokers who feel this way, including about children

hell i remember being that kid and having adults intentionally blow smoke into my face for "complaining"

i'm sorry you had that happen to you. trans-heart it's genuinely incredible how common of an occurrence it was. i actually had someone flick a lit cherry into my eye over it at one point, though that didn't meet with the same raucous approval from onlookers, at least

i wanna say i was 7, maybe a little younger. some people really don't like even the vague notion of someone "telling them what to do" 🙄

I don’t get the joke. Is there some kind of online discourse that I missed out on in order to understand this? Like is this a reference to something?

I think saying absurdly out of pocket things can be funny, but there’s gotta be some context. You can say some ghoulish neoliberal shit on here and 99% of the time people will understand it’s a joke because of the context of the website

consider the context of twitter then. the joke is she's playing someone who is incredibly paranoid and self-absorbed and reflexively defensive towards the slightest perceived gesture of disapproval. this is the default psychic mode of so much of that site and therefore internet in general.

and also consider that if this were a real person, it would still be really fucking funny, because holy shit what a freak.

I don't see what the big deal is. That baby can smoke near me if they want. I don't complain or fake cough because I mind my own business.

Can someone explain to a neurodivergent comrade like myself what kind of bit this is? Do it as plainly as you can because I just dont get where this person is coming from if this is a bit.

This is an exaggerated statement that is meant to mock the persecution complex some smokers have, I think.

Thanks for the explanation it helped a lot, and it does feel like that is the case.

In case the other explanation isn't plain enough:

      • Smoking is a controversial habit
      • People who don't smoke often (rightfully!) highly object to being exposed to it, and sometimes they do this in exaggerated or dramatic ways
      • People who do smoke are sometimes offended by other people's disgust or demands to not be exposed to smoke, and this can sometimes develop into disdain for what they perceive as weakness

The joke, as I understand it, is that it is extremely silly to believe a toddler is doing exaggerated, dramatic response to smoke exposure, and it is silly for a smoker to be offended by the response of a small child, especially so offended that they're posting about it.

I should probably note that I'm also neurodivergent and sometimes wildly misunderstand humor and find things funny for entirely different reasons than neurotypical people do, so this could all be wrong. This is why I found it funny.

Also, I usually smoke a few cigarettes when I drink, and if I'm currently involved in outdoor conversation, I do stuff like hold my cigarette hand straight up above me and constantly watch the wind direction to keep smoke away from other people as much possible, whether they smoke or not. If I'm not actively chatting, I will go walk around by myself or find a spot away from everyone's airspace to check my phone. I don't find it particularly difficult to be respectful and considerate of other people's right to breathe clean air.

EDIT: Maybe this is a bit/joke/whatever. Not a particularly funny one, unless the goal is "haha you believed people could be that terrible which can never happen haha fuck you" smuglord

A joke is a display of humour in which words are used within a specific and well-defined narrative structure to make people laugh and is usually not meant to be interpreted literally.

The US started clamping down on cigarettes so that Americans would not notice the inferior quality of American tobacco compared to that of communist Cuba.
