Maybe we can distill the secret formula for what can make a podcast good if we discuss what can make them awful

EDIT: Gonna take a moment to shamelessly shill for my shitty, tiny podcast no one listens to - https://open.spotify.com/show/0herzR8g2CsOqI3o3aD4kA

The episode I listened to about it (back when I was a lib, im so sorry) literally began with an audio recording of some reporter getting a burger in a drive thru to demonstrate the country's economic success. They tried to end the ep with a "was it worth it?" question after talking about Pinochet being... well.. Pinochet, but the prior hour of idolizing the architects behind the coux government made the answer they'd give pretty clear

The pro West Wing podcast that always has Pete Buttigieg on it (guess that's a bit of an obvious answer but still)

Also a lot of True Crime stuff makes me feel uneasy, especially when they go straight from talking about some teenager who has been brutally murdered or whatever to an ad read for dollar shave club.

My Favorite Murder or Last Podcast on the Left?

A lot of the true crime ones are also bad with their coverage on cops.

a bajillion years ago when I was in my early 20s I used to slightly be in to entrepreneur shit and I used to listen a podcast called smart passive income where this guy brings on grifters to tell you about their grift but usually after the window on it already closed

S/O to death is just around the corner. I feel like I don't absorb half the shit he talks about because I'm too dumb/uncultured but a good podcast nonetheless.

I thought Serial season 3 as pretty good - pretty bleak look at the broken legal system in the US.

Matt Christman telling the hosts Iran should have a nuke.

Is this a bit? I read Felix said this on Lovett or Leave It but it got cut.

Yeah no, I believe you for sure. I was just wondering if it was an open bit by the Chapo boys to try to shoehorn that in when they get invited to lib shows.

Holy shit I just listened to it

The response to "you shouldn't poison a poor person's water" is "well some would argue that capitalism is a better system than state-run bureaucracy."

I'm so glad that there's other nerds online like me that would also waste an hour hate-listening through this.

I'll confess my sin. Before I got to chapo and heard about the podcast named after it, I finally got a smart phone. One of the first podcasts I'd listen to on my commute was Mueller She Wrote.

It took off during the eponymous investigation and I thought it would be like a true crime podcast while also giving news updates on what I thought was important.

In retrospect, I cringe just looking at the image the show uses, but the fawning over the FBI and Mueller in particular got to be too much. I stopped listening on the third episode, but the memory won't leave my brain.

I once tried to listen to Cumtown. After about ten minutes of multiple people trying and failing to remember a movie they'd recently seen, I gave up.

Same thing happened to me but my former friend was the person who made me listen to it because “it’s SO funny dude”. He showed me the Bill Maher bit where they say the N-word over and over snd he kept looking at me expecting me to laugh.

It has it's moments if you like that kind of humor, but 90% is just inane stream of consciousness. And those moments basically 100% hinge on Nick. Adam contributes almost nothing besides being a human punching bag and Stav is just a live laugh track.

It's amazing because even after all this time Ethan still has no idea how to host a podcast

It's sad that they went from making good content to a mediocre podcast that was at first a Joe Rogan knockoff and has devolved into YouTube drama bullshit. And now he's best friends with Trish Paytas, who he used to hate? Yeah no thanks. I like Ethan and Hila but the podcast just sucks. I imagine he does it because it's less effort and more money.

there was something unsavory about listening to Sword and Scale and slowly realizing that the creator/narrator is an actual sociopath

Last Podcast on the Left. If I wanted to listen to a bunch of dumb libs doing insufferable and obnoxius riffs at each other over the course of 90 minutes......I'd listen to freaking Chapo Trap House amirite 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

Worst single episode of something was a Sam Harris's podcast where he interviewed Douglas Murray, which I listened to in a sort of "know your enemy" type mindset. I lasted about 25 minutes.

God Louis Rossman is a shithead. the whole "i repair macs on stream" thing is cool but also lets talk about politics the whole time (shitty politics that are heavy libertarian at best) and now he just does politics with no mac repair.

nah it's a broken clock situation (a clock you should have a right to repair, incidentally). it's often parroted by obnoxious libertarian types but the idea that you shouldn't have a right to interact however you want with something you bought outright is peak LSC

Chapo. but thats mainly because I dont listen to many podcasts. It's not bad but it's not good either. I'll be honest I have no clue how such a large sub spawned off of a generally middling podcast.

Chapo allows us to participate in a shoulder-punch kind of masculinity without feeling guilty about the politics that comes with it.
