    Hell has frozen over

Unfortunately. RCS is a steaming pile of dog crap. This will just promote adoption of dog crap as a solution, rather than keep pressure on Google (and Apple) to adopt a proper interoperable messaging system.

This will also enable Apple to continue keeping iMessage closed off, which is why they're on board. They can show RCS recipients with another bubble color.

I know saying RCS is crap is unpopular here, but go read about it's flawed encryption, how many people have problems with it not delivering messages, etc.

Hell, the failure to deliver messages is like SMS was 10 years ago*. How is that acceptable in any way? I use other apps that know when the device is offline, and will send when the connection has been validated, you know, like a 21st century app should work.

In the end I just won't use RCS, I'd rather just move on to proper apps (hell, even Telegram is better than RCS, by a long way).

*SMS is significantly better today, but has a known failure rate of 10%.

RCS supports e2e encryption and while I think you have valid concerns, it's much safer, faster, and more useful (larger files, read receipts, reactions) than SMS. Progress is good
