Engineering Explained did a great video about this. The short answer is that if you live in an area where most of the electricity comes from fossil fuels, it's probably best to get a hybrid or plug-in hybrid car rather than full electric. But full electric cars are far better for the environment than gas cars when the power comes from renewable sources.
