The word of the year is now just something for boomers to roll their eyes at around the water cooler. It doesn't actually have any importance.

    2022 - Goblin Mode

    2021 - Vax

2020 - whatever your local term for a stay-at-home order was

    2019 - Climate Emergency

    2018 - Toxic

    2017 - Youthquake

    2016 - Post-truth

2015 - 😂 (this emoji was the word of the year.)

I feel like rizz has been in the popular lexicon for a few years now, whereas enshittification only got coined this year afaik. I agree it's a far more poignant word, but probably not that common outside of some circles.

whoever it is that decides the word of the year does not want to call attention to the ongoing process of enshittification and will therefore ignore the existence of the word. the atomic unit of propaganda is emphasis, after all
