I've been meaning to switch for a while now as it somehow gets more and more unusable. The new desktop update is the last straw for me. But I'm not as up-to-date on tech stuff as I once was. Assume I'm basically tech-illiterate. Any suggestions?

The code is open source, its very easy to see even they don't have access to the information. Even if they were willing it would be impossible to turn anything over to feds. Calling Proton an op is an op to keep people using one of the truly private services out there.

It's come up before on here to be wary of using protonmail :sadness:

I've seen those arguments and having looked into it I strongly disagree with them. This is the most critical review of proton I can find. You can also find direct reviews of the source code.

They're about as secure as you can get.

Edit: they're are more secure options but unless you're using something like Tails OS they're not really going to help.

Sorry to burst your bubble. Also it is irrelevant if it is open source. They can literally just spy on your stuff directly since they own the servers. You have no evidence that they don’t hand all of your info over to anyone that asks.
