I personally want to buy a CD-player and a laptop with a DVD drive and start collecting CDs and DVDs again. I think that it's nice to own a physical copy of something. I also think this will make me listen to albums and watch movies more. I'm done with Netflix and Spotify since you don't own the media you consume and they can take it down anytime. But it's also nostalgia for me since DVDs and CDs were everywhere in my childhood and we went to the record store and the video store a lot.
But what do you think about it? And what do you think about CD vs Vinyl vs Cassette?
I believe strongly that you do not own anything that you do not have physically in your possession. For digital media this means anything that you "buy" that is stored on a cloud or on someone else's server is not really yours. This doesn't mean you have to fill your home up with CDs and DVDs but i personally back up all digital media that i own on external hard drives. This includes books, music, movies, games, etc. I also make sure i can access and use it all without an internet connection, because i for one do not trust that the internet as we know it will be around forever, or that our access to it will not be cut one day.
I prefer to own physical media and own a vinyl/book collection for several reasons:
- Internet can be unreliable and downloading these things takes too much space
- Sometimes Spotify/whoever doesn't have the album I want (for example, several Bob Dylan Bootleg Series volumes don't have full versions on Spotify and several albums from other artists like Ringo Starr and other albums from popular bands are missing)
- Like others in this thread have mentioned you don't "own" a video game/album/book/whatever unless you have a physical copy pretty much, if you're using it digitally it is stored on someone else's server and rights to use it can be revoked at any point
- I just think having a physical collection is kind of neat
I always buy physical video games for consoles when I can. Recently I've finally had it with streamed music and video and have resolved to create a physical collection.
Digitale medier >>>>>> Fysiske medier. Men det er bare min holdning
20TB hard drive, vpn, and qbittorrent
If you want to own the media you consume, there’s no better way.
Make sure you got a backup. I run a 11TB raid 5 server with VPN and qbittorrent running 24/7. I have 2 spare drives if any fail. Will probably look to upgrade the capacity one day but right now I'm not quite half full.
As an end user I much prefer digital copies without DRM over physical copies. The only reason I would keep physical copies of something is to showcase on a shelf which I personally don't do. The only exception is PS5 games where I prefer physical because I can buy pre-owned copies and sell them once I am done.
I have CD of every movie I like stored on shelf, for example, as soon as something new comes out on blu-ray 4k, I'm buying it, it's much easier.
I have a vinyl collection. It's nice to have physical copies of something. Plus the album covers look nice in frames on the wall as well.
