there really is probably some level of truth to this. like i know people (sadly) who call movies in the 90s "old" because of the way it was filmed or how it doesn't have that fresh, extra crispy fake look like all the CGI dominated movies are now. It's kinda sad to dismiss a century of film because it doesn't look brand new.

Yeah I've taken a cinematography course before in university and they teach you all this stuff about painting with the light and using lighting techniques borrowed from painting which turns out so beautiful when its shot on film. So it sucks when you watch all this stuff coming out from Disney and Netflix that just looks like upscaled iphone footage that was shot for efficiency rather than wanting to make something visually interesting or unique to whoever made it.

it's always a race to the bottom with capitalism, obviously no one here is surprised but it's amazing how starved we are in a way for actual good cinematography. Some really good stuff still comes out but you know, the bar is so low that it can be a bit difficult to judge how good it really is sometimes when practically all you see is just churned out garbage. It's so rare for me to be wow'd by new films now, but i know it isn't a lost art, there is still some dope ass people out there trying to make the movie of their dreams and shit.

The colour grading in new film and tv fucking kills me. Everything in Netflix is this gross blue-yellow shite. It's sadly filtering down into all other films as well. And don't get me started on the everything-must-be grey Marvel grading.

I recently watched https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_Never_Sent_(film) and it was absolutely stunning - let alone for a film made 60 years ago

I actually saw this movie maybe 10 years ago, sorta forgot about it! Gonna add it to my queue. Have you by chance seen Ballada o soldate/Ballad of a Soldier? I watched it around the same time and also loved it a lot
