Bet he doesn’t mention the white terror or even what happened to the aboriginal Taiwanese.

I'd go further and say he will imply that the aboriginals are leading the independence movement

Even if he does, its completely useless and it will mean nothing to most people eating anti-china propaganda with the shovel when he will most certainly describe today's Taiwan as a thriving democracy or whatever and contrast it with the AUTHORITARIAN PRC.

Wonder if he even acknowledges which party is currently in power.

Nevermind where Taiwanese airspace allegedly extends.

Just reposting my comment from the orher thread ,nothing else to be said

The fact that there are self proclaimed socialists , communists and anarchists that even consider giving a late night show host any benifit of the doupt of not being garbage state department propaganda regarding foreign policy ,especially after the Venezuela and China videos, is beyond me. The mere fact that there is a “Taiwan” video as if anything changed on China’s approach and actions in decades should tell you everything you need to know. The only thing that changed is manufacturing of consent for this new cold war and the US gravitating its military presence towards that erea and against China. And he , one way or the other, will propagate the narrative and be a good little stooge. Worse so he is much more effective than others for the entire “demsoc/socdem” or even “anarchist” sphere cause a sympathetic view of him has been allowed and developed and people have been consuming his content way less criticaly than other bourgeois media cause he is “one of the better ones”

Also anyone that comments anything in the vain of “but he is the most socdem of the late night hosts” should instantly get 1 week ban

Regarding speculation ,since its also about its history too, he probably will have to go the white terror and martial law cause its literally the majority of political life for Taiwanese history. Not in its full anticommunist dimension tho. Also it scores him points among socdems/leftlibs which he will use to effectively whisper all that sweet state department cold war propaganda in their , open and uncritical now, ears . Also bringing up the "dark history" will mean nothing to no one regarding their views of the conflict cause he will most certainly describe Taiwan today as a "shinning democracy" that moved over from the bad things and became like US and has all them human rights and stuff ,and oppose that to the image of the EVIL AND AUTHORITARIAN CHINA , all of which will superboost the manufacturing of concent around the conflict

If this were 2002 the episode would be about how problematic Saddam Hussein is instead.

tangentially the r/taiwan subreddit is constantly flooded with the most insecure we-are-a-real-country shit like breathless joy over some company putting "Taiwan" on the shipping menu for "country" on their online store, that kind of stuff

Outside of the questionable politics, I'm wondering what shitty running gag they'll put in that segment.

he said a lot of ok things that are just verifiably accurate, later he glossed over taiwan claiming to be china and how that effects the conversation on 'independence' and then ended on a 'and thats why we should support the cia's line towards taiwan'

mealy mouthed but he legit cited a cia/fed doc at some point and came to the literal same conclusion as the doc later on without saying it

he also really glossed over the indigenous people of taiwan and how a majority want to join china because they give minorities better treatment than the ROC, instead preferring to cite some random thing about how the majority of taiwanese dont care about the situation

taiwan has an aboriginal congress, they majority vote for kmt / independents. the independents are pro-reunification and the kmt have the whole weird language thing where they think theyre real china and therefore think china is a single territorial unit

indigenous people there have big hate feelings towards chiang kai shek but seem to enjoy the new KMT

the reason some of the independents want reunification is the laws on the mainland are better for minority groups

would rather watch Tyler Durden holding a gun to his head and saying his life depends on explaining the difference between benshengren and waishengren

btw this ep of historic.ly podcast is good, Xiangyu talks Taiwan's political history through a class-based lens for two hours
