Why do people even like lawns? They're so much uglier than like a meadow or whatever was there before they flattened it

Sweet, so we specifically create a sterile buffer ecosystem around our houses so that we can minimize our interactions with nature. I wonder if billionaire prepper compounds will have something similar, like a ring of irradiated wasteland that no-one can live in.

Yeah, but like, a 4 meter perimeter of lawn around your outside walls will discourage mice & stuff just fine. Or like, 4 meters of leaves or pinestraw. Doesn't have to be grass.

These McGolf lawns have the same purpose they always did, conspicuous consumption.

It's not even consumption, most people don't like lawns, it's the evil race to the bottom known as "protecting property values". If you use your house for anything that the Market does not like, it will make you unable to sell your home and your neighbors too!

There's lots of ground cover options that aren't grass and don't get overgrown like grass. Exact choices depend on climate, but even in a cool, wet place you're likely better off with forest and moss/hosta type stuff instead of just big wavy fields of grass.
