New year, new anime season, new general discussion thread. It is a time for new beginnings. A time to look forward to the infinite possibilities that the coming year can hold for us. A time to look forward to all the great and not-so-great anime that the winter 2024 season holds for us.

I want to hear what it is that you are looking forward to, trailers you liked, anime that you want to hype up because you loved the manga/novel. Equally, I want to hear what shows you think should be avoided or that look mid af. Check the list here for a complete list of the winter 2024 shows coming our way.

As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers in this community, check the guide here.

I have a couple tweaks to the list I posted previously. I plan on watching a handful of shows in the new season:

    Definitely watching

    • Frieren - continuing from last season. Has been absolutely phenomenal so far.
    • Delicious in Dungeon - A very well-received manga being adapted by Studio Trigger. Say no more.
    • Villainess Level 99 - I really like the source for this one but thought that it was too niche to ever be adapted to an anime. I don't expect this to be everybody's cup of tea, but I hope it is going to be done well.
    • Tsukimichi Season 2 - I really like the source material for this one and the first season was...alright. The story gets better as it goes and it changed studios for the second season (and got 2 cours for season 2), so I am hoping the animation improves alongside the story.
    • Apothecary Diaries - This show is continuing from the fall season, but I haven't actually seen any of it yet. I plan on trying to catch up over this coming winter season so that I can end it being caught up. I actually work professionally in medicine, so I am looking forward to it!

    Hoping to watch (time permitting)

    • The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic - The source for this one is decent and the beginning couple bits of this story are the best that I am familiar with. So, time permitting, I am hoping to see the best character Rose in anime form.
    • 'Tis Time for Torture Princess - I have read a couple chapters of this manga, but I am curious to see how an anime adaptation will work.

Might pick up depending on reviews

    • Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! - I have heard good things about the source for this one, but I don't really know anything about it. I am going to wait to see how well it is received as an adaptation. I might just opt to read the manga instead.
    • Metallic Rouge - This is an anime original, but it looks awesome. I had to cut it for time, but if it is reviewed super well and another show I am watching is disappointing, I might bump it up into the regularly watching column.

I have quite a few things on my list that I'll be at least watching one episode of and I'll pop em all in a big list below! I know that list looks enormous and intimidating, but it's very likely this list will be halved by the end of the season. I'm not one to make myself suffer through shows just to finish them. If they don't win me over after episode one, they can join my massive list of dropped shows forever.

    • Delicious in the Dungeon
    • A Sign of Affection
    • Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!
    • The Witch and the Beast
    • Metallic Rouge
    • The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil
    • Gushing Over Magical Girls
    • Kyuujitsu no Warumono-san
    • 7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy!
    • Fluffy Paradise
    • Hime-sama, "Goumon" no Jikan desu
    • Pon no Michi
    • Delusional Monthly Magazine
    • Meitou "Isekai no Yu" Kaitaku-ki: AraFou Onsen Mania Tensei-saki wa, Nonbiri Onsen Tengoku Deshita~
    • 30-sai made Doutei da to Mahou Tsukai ni Nareru Rashii
    • Snack Basue

Lighter season for me. Quite a lot I’d like to catch up on.

    New:

    • Frieren - my 2023 AOTY. This’ll be a must-watch.
    • The Dangers in my Heart S2 - first season was so much better than I expected. Definitely check this out.
    • Solo Leveling - know nothing about it, but there’s a lot of buzz, so I’ll try a couple episodes.

    Catch-up:

    • Apothecary Diaries - lots of buzz, but haven’t had time yet.
    • Helck - almost finished. Enjoyed way more than I expected.
    • The Eminence in Shadow S2 - stalled after a few episodes. Wasn’t in the right mood. Try again in winter.
    • Pluto - only watched first episode. Good so far, but hasn’t captured me.
    • 100 Girlfriends - almost finished. Didn’t like it as much as I expected, but I’m enjoying it more the wackier it gets.

    Might finally find time for:

    • Trigun (OG) - slowly tinkering through it.
    • JJK - stalled somewhere in S1.
    • Slime-san - somewhere in S2?
    • Ancient Magus’ Bride

tl;dr: the new season's yaml files haven't yet been fully merged into the source code (PR here)

@chaorace@lemmy.sdf.org might want to chime in here as well as the bot maintainer, but I think I know what is going on, but the explanation is going to be a bit technical.

Shinobu is a lemmy-focused fork of the holo project. Both projects use user-curated yaml files that contain all the information for each show. As an example, you can check out Fall 2023's yaml file here. This winter's yaml file has not been merged into the holo project yet. There is an open pull request to do so, but it is still open. The reddit mods have clearly already merged these commits since their bot is posting, but Shinobu hasn't done so yet. Also, the reddit bot is not a straight copy of the source code that is on github, there are clearly some tweaks they do on the backend to do things like pick up shows that shinobu can't see, but that is a whole other topic.

I suspect that chaorace is waiting for the pull request to close and the new season's yaml to be merged before adding it to shinobu, but I haven't spoken with them. For what it is worth, I run a copy of holo on a test lemmy instance I host and by merging the 5 commits in the PR, my local holo was able to make posts for the winter shows (but it doesn't pick up Classroom of the Elite for whatever reason picked it up after a couple hours).

Yeah, I'm subscribed to notifications for the PR and have been holding out waiting for it to get merged because it's easier to maintain a clean git history that way. If the PR's still not merged by this evening I'll just bite the bullet and do it the (slightly) harder way for the sake of staying current with the new seasonals

Have you read the manga for Hokkaido Gals? I am debating trying to find time to watch it or if I should just dive into the manga instead. It is usually a lot easier for me to find time to fit in a couple chapters of a manga to my schedule compared to a 30 minute block of time for a show.

No I haven't. In terms of scheduling, it was the opposite for me. I have a well-defined pace for watching an anime episode versus reading manga chapters. I have a tendency to binge chapters and either run out of material quickly, or make my day unproductive. Usually both lol.

I will definitely watch: Mashle, Solo leveling, Dungeon Meshi, Metallic rouge
If I catch up with SLF, frieren and apothecary then I will watch that as well

I will check at least one episode: Wrong way to use healing, The witch and the beast, Sengoku Youko, Sasaki and Peeps, 'Tis Time for "Torture," Princess, The Unwanted Undead Adventurer, Delusional Monthly Magazine

Sasaki and pigeon looks as fun as Handyman Saitou in another world

I'm finding the time to watch a lot more shows this season, and so far I'm finding enjoyment in the first episodes of some unexpected titles:

    • Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete • Gushing over Magical Girls - Villain POV with S&M lewdness
    • Sokushi Cheat - Kill all the evil classmates in an isekai. Kind of a similar vibe to The Executioner And Her Way Of Life
    • Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha • The Unwanted Undead Adventurer - An adventurer unexpectedly joins the monster track of advancement and starts from being a weak skeleton
    • Chiyu Mahou no Machigatta Tsukaikata: Senjou wo Kakeru Kaifuku Youin • The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic - An average student gets sucked into an isekai. All likeable characters so far.

Sousou No Freiren continues to be a strong show.

Solo Leveling - I've enjoyed the manhwa, and this first episode is okay, it could have been longer to get to the key plot mechanic.

Conversely, I was disappointed by the first episode of the highly anticipated Dungeon Meshi/Delicious In Dungeon, which is fine. Some shows take a few episodes for the writing to gain traction.

I was also a bit disappointed with the first episode of Dungeon Meshi. I wrote in more detail over here, but it felt like it wanted to be two shows at the same time (dark with dead sister, light with silly cooking) and it didn't mesh well. I have only heard great things about the manga, so I expect it to become clearer in tone as it goes, but I am with you just based on episode 1.

So far, my list is looking like:

    Sasaki and Peeps
    Tis Time For "Torture," Princess
    Delicious in Dungeon
    Solo Leveling
    Gushing Over Magical Girls
    Mr Villain's Day Off
    7th Time Loop
The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic
My Instant Death Ability Is Overpowered
    Fluffy Paradise

I'll probably also watch, at the minimum:

Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp
    Metallic Rouge
    Urusei Yatsura S2
    The Unwanted Undead Adventurer
    Tales of Wedding Rings
    A Sign of Affection
The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil
Mashle: Magic and Muscles (just need to finish S1 first)

It's an adaptation of a manga. Specifically an extremely perverse yuri lolicon manga about a girl who is obsessed with magical girls only to become a magical bad guy and wind up forced to fight them. Expect a lot of underage same sex BDSM. Not really something I personally feel comfortable watching.

I haven't read the source manga for this show, but those that have said to expect something completely unhinged (in the best way).
