Should we move this community to ani.social?
Removed by modAs an anime fan, l'm not feeling welcomed on this instance.
lemmy.ml arbitrarily defederating from ani.social without notice sucks because the shinobu bot doesn't work here.
Not just that, but if the lemmy.ml owners have decided that loli drawn girls are CSAM, then they could banhammer this /c/ at any time as well, because that's how a lot of female characters are drawn.
ani.social, on the other hand is only defederated from Threads, so in theory I could do all my browsing from there instead.
/c/Anime, and /c/Ukraine@sopuli.xyz are all I come here for anyway.
It sucks because this is the largest anime community by membership in lemmyspace, and I appreciate all the work we're putting in to make this community work, but that's how I'm feeling about it.
I think that this community should migrate, but for a different reason: topic.
The topic of lemmy.ml is privacy and free-as-freedom software. Most other content here is off-topic, including anime. It was fine when it was just lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml, as you'd have no other place to discuss anime in Lemmy, but now the situation is different.
And ideally, communities should be managed/moderated/administered by people who know well the topic of the community.
Just subbed to !anime@ani.social
Because of all the defederation stuff and most users being vocally negative about anime in general here, I previously assumed that it was blocked by a lot of instances and didn't think to actually check.
Moving it makes sense because ani.social seems more like the home for anime on Lemmy, in the same way how programming.dev focuses on programming, discuss.tchncs.de focuses on DIY/electronics, and lemmy.dbzer0.com focuses on digital maritime and copyleft etc.
Disclosure: as a moderator of the /c/anime and /c/manga communities on ani.social, I don't want to try to influence anybody's decision regarding this as I think there is plenty of space for multiple communities to exist at the same time.
That being said, after the defederation happened and there was clear hostility from the ml admins toward much of this type of content is when I made my account on that instance and started up activity on those two communities. I agree that there is an inherent risk of these communities being purged from the ml instance and that is one of the main reasons I wanted to establish an alternative community that is well established with existing content that users can migrate easily to. Quoting myself from that post:
In any case, I think this issue validates concerns that were raised after the initial defederation happened that the ml admins could come to view any kind of lewd content or fanservice as anathema to their instance. It begs the question if the anime or manga communities on ml are on borrowed time. If the admin’s metaphorical Eye of Sauron passes over their community on a day a lewd clip, key visual, or trailer is posted, that could be it for them.
All that said, the reality is that unless you use an ml account (which you unfortunately posted with), then you can access both communities. I had primarily been using this ml account on lemmy for some time until the defederation happened, and then proceeded to make an account over on ani.social to access that content and drive activity in those communities.
I think having one community be a hub is a lot better than the split setup we currently have. It makes it hard to discover content, you miss out on discussions, sometimes have to write the same comment twice and if you subscribe to both your feed gets cluttered with duplicate posts.
Not to mention ani.social being an instance dedicated to anime makes community management there a bit easier (although I'm of the opinion any medium-sized community should just get their own instance given the flexibility in management that provides and then cross-post to hub communities like /c/anime)
As someone who recently posted into both communities let me tell you this one feels a lot less active already (see ani.social vs lemmy.ml). I absolutely encourage people to switch over, community fragmentation isn't a good thing in most cases and as OP pointed out lemmy.ml has made it clear that it's not the place for Anime/Manga communities.
