A spell to painlessly and instantly kill someone is Forbidden with a capital F, and a mind control spell which turns someone into a zombie-like puppet is also Forbidden, but a memory erasure spell which can erase anything between the last five minutes and/or causing total retrograde amnesia is not only legal, it’s nearly mandatory for every adult wizard to know and use to maintain their masquerade.
