Aw that sucks. There isn't state/public owned wilderness? In the USA temporary occupation of national forest and BLM (bureau of land management) land are paid for in some way by taxes and you can chill there totally legally for a couple weeks though i don't know the exact rules. Canada has crown land which seems roughly similar. You just aren't supposed to start fires if above a certain alert level and you're supposed to go potty a certain distance from water. You usually need permits in national parks and definitely state parks but national forests are pretty chill.
