They were a punk band from late 80s/early 90s NJ, and Optimist Club was their last record - they had gone from a straightforward punk/hardcore band to something kinda like The Police. Not quite straightforward punk, much more of an indie rock influence, and an underlying darkness to the songs that's clearly present but hard to articulate.
