I remember once reading a science fiction webcomic where, upon being born, AIs were billed for the cost of their development and forced into indentured servitude until they finished paying their debt to the corporation that created them.
This wasn't meant to be a sign that the society depicted was a dystopic hellhole. The comic's author was a lolbertarian.
This is a plot point in one of the Ghost in the Shell OVAs. The Major is on the hook for the cost of her body, despite not really having other options.
